Relevance of Mastitis Control Strategies: Profitability of Lactational Treatment for Subclinical Infections in Dairy Herds, Assessed by a Bio-economic Simulation Model

چکیده

Currently under French conditions, mastitis control schemes rarely include lactational treatment of subclinical intramammary infections (LT). A bioeconomic simulation model (ECOMAM) was used to examine the economic consequences of control strategies including LT of young cows. The core-model of ECOMAM was developed as dynamic (daily time stepping), mechanistic (individual representation of heifers and cows) and stochastic (using probabilities for simulation of both occurrence and consequences of mastitis). This model was used to study the economic worth of several control strategies based on LT applied to different udder health statuses of a 800 000 l-quotum dairy herd with 100 year-present cows under the context of western France. To be profitable, control strategies with LT had to be able to create a sufficient decrease in the incidence of new infections (obtained by improved prevention). Strategies based on strict culling rules resulted in rapidly improved herd SCC but led very often to not to fill up the quota, implying lower revenue. Finally, except for borderline unsatisfactory statuses (levels of SCC penalties <1.5% of the milk price), to implement LT, without any strong culling policy but with an improved prevention, was profitable in most cases. Key-words: Dairy Cow; Intramammary Infection; Lactational Treatment; Economics.

A polymerase chain reaction based study on the subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis in cattle in Ahvaz

Streptococcus agalactiae , S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis are Gram-positive bacterial pathogens that affect cows in dairy herds. These are considered as the major causes of economic losses of dairy producers without a control program. To reveal the role of these agents in inducing subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle in Ahvaz, 100 CMT-positive milk samples and 20 CMT-negative milk samples were c...

Use of partial budgeting to determine the economic benefits of antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae.

The economic effect of lactational antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical intramammary infections due to Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae was explored by means of partial budgeting. Effects at cow level and herd level were modelled, including prevention of clinical mastitis episodes and the prevention of transmission of infections. Input variables for our deterministic mo...

Bovine mastitis, which is an inflammation of the mammary gland frequently resulting from bacterial infection, causes the majority of economic losses to the dairy producers. The prevalence of mastitis in dairy cattle is relatively high. Bovine mastitis can be classified based on clinical futures as clinical or subclinical. Both forms produce significant economic losses due to rejected milk, degr...

Effect of lactation therapy on Staphylococcus aureus transmission dynamics in two commercial dairy herds

BACKGROUND Treatment of subclinical mastitis during lactation can have both direct (individual animal level) and indirect (population level) effects. With a few exceptions, prior research has focused on evaluating the direct effects of mastitis treatment, and to date no controlled field trials have been conducted to test whether beneficial indirect effects of lactation treatment strategies targ...
